Fred Crowley celebrated his 67th birthday the night before embarking on a Salmon River adventure with his wife Alice, his brother Tom, and a group of people he had just met. No matter their age, profession or gender they all had one thing in common - each was a cancer survivor. “All these people that we had never seen before in our lives, they were instantly like family,” Fred remembered. “We all had been through the same thing - we had a different kind of bond.” Fred said that meeting others who understood what he and Alice had been through and talking to them about it, helped to change his outlook on life with cancer. “We felt like we were not so alone anymore.” After the trip, Alice felt the changes, too. “There is a connection between cancer survivors that cannot be explained, we did not totally realize this until we were brought together, we returned home with the feeling of healing, emotionally and physically.” Fred and Alice were high school sweethearts who reunited in 1976, 15 years after Fred graduated. Each brought two children to the marriage, Alice’s boys and Fred’s girls. They built a life together. Fred battled lung cancer since his first diagnosis in 2005. Alice was diagnosed in 2007 close to the time that Fred’s cancer returned in his remaining lung. They travelled regularly in the last several years to keep their minds on living. Fred’s energy and spirits waned in his last few months. “He was tired of fighting,” said Alice. He did find a way to finish a list of jobs he wanted to get done before he died. “He had me push him in his wheelchair to wherever the job was and he told me how to do it,” said Alice. Fred died peacefully surrounded by his beloved Alice, his children and grandchildren. We miss him.
