Dear fabulous donors, Hi, my name is Janae Chandler. I am 13 years old and am in the 8th grade. I came to River Discovery and had an amazing experience! When I was 7 years old, I was diagnosed with what is called juvenile pilocystic astrocytoma, which is basically a slow growing brain tumor. It affected my eyes permanently. I don’t have any side vision and my vision is not 20/20 anymore, but I refuse to let it affect my life. I have been in remission for five years. One of the best things about River Discovery is you are not alone in your struggle. You learn that you are not the only one who has cancer. At River Discovery you learn that you can share laughter with lots of teenagers. I am very much a home body. I love my family so much and I never want to leave them, but at River Discovery I learned the importance of being with people that I could have fun with that is not my family. When I came home I was so excited to see my family and tell them all about my many new adventures on River Discovery. I came home with a lot more confidence and self-esteem. t is very important for other teen cancer survivors to come on this adventure because it teaches them so many things. It teaches them to have fun and to love the people around you, but the most important thing you learn on River Discovery is to accept yourself for who you are. I would like to thank you for your past support! You are the reason that I got to have this amazing experience! I know that it is a tough economy, but it has been a tough life for teen cancer survivors too. This was a good way to get away from everything else that has happened in our lives.
