Brian Wheeler was an inspiration to those of us at River Discovery who got to know him on the 2009 Adult Adventure program. He had an aggressive form of brain cancer and was still in treatment at the time. A former river guide, Brian did not think he would go on another river trip at that stage in his disease. His wife, Marnie, handled all of the planning and logistics to ensure he rafted on the Salmon River that year. Ellen Nolan, staff medical volunteer on the program Brian attended, wrote this about him after the adventure, “I watched Brian, who has been extremely ill and is still fragile looking, take off running across the sand at lunch one day toward the end of the week. It was so funny, and he was just beaming. It was like watching him come back to life.” His family was his first love and Brian talked about Marnie and his two children, Inara and Bergen, throughout the week on the river. Brian was an outdoorsman and an exceptional photographer. He loved skiing, whitewater rafting and canoeing; mountain biking and hiking. His photographs tell a story of the paths he chose throughout his life. “My experience, like all the paths I have traveled, reminds me of the mossy pines where I have been most of my life. A place where I find my breath, my spirit, my heart, my love… a path is everywhere whether it be in the woods, desert, mountains, river, my soul, other souls... on these journeys I find generosity, love, sharing, helping, music, dance… I someday would like to help with River Discovery. I am of the same thread and have much to give. I have seen much in life and since cancer much, much more with no regret.” Brian wrote this after his adventure with River Discovery.
