Salmon River Trips Target Young Cancer Survivors - 4/9/2009
McCall Star-News
Registration is open to teen and young adult cancer survivors for whitewater adventure programs on the Salmon River this summer with Camp DiscoveryIdaho.
These cost-free river trips offer young survivors opportunity to connect with peers, challenge themselves in the outdoors and address physical and emotional issues unique to cancer.
Two programs are being offered, one for teens aged 13 - 17 and the second for adults aged 18 - 30. Teens are scheduled for July 23 to 29 and adults for September 1 - 7.
Young people who share physical and emotional experiences with fellow survivors gain therapeutic benefits that medical treatments do not provide. These programs are designed to allow participants the ability to choose the appropriate level of activity while providing encouragement and opportunity for accomplishment in a wilderness setting - an empowering and healing experience.
Tim, a 22 year-old first diagnosed with cancer at the age of three found renewed strength paddling on the Salmon River. His mother Susan commented on the change she noticed in her son after attending Camp DiscoveryIdaho. “The river brought about energy in Tim which hasn’t been seen since his surgery and start of chemo 15 months ago. This nonstop kayaker was not the same person drained from chemo.”
Rafting and camping in a wilderness setting offers an exhilarating environment for groups to work as a team building trust and support while exploring individual post-treatment concerns.
“The discussions as a group, and more so with individuals…made the trip a healing process. Everyone was so open, willing to talk, listen and be a part of the experience together,” remembers Brian, a 2008 participant.
The programs begin in Salmon, end in McCall and traverse the wilderness stretch of the Salmon River. WildernessRiver Outfitters, a licensed outfitter for 37 years, will guide the rafting in oar boats, paddle boats and inflatable kayaks. Physical challenges are tailored to individual fitness levels and abilities. All rafting and camping gear is provided.
